Pure class with a touch of drama.

Badgley Mischka’s Fall 2020 New York Fashion Week Show was nothing short of all things prim and proper. British influence, noted!

What truly elevated the art here, however, was the added flair. The light inside of women is literally and figuratively featured through the details of light reflection.

By the powers of metallics and sparkle, Badgley Mischka had an “I am woman, hear me roar” moment.

It is as if modern royalty was the theme of the show, the perfect combination of chic and tasteful glamour were exhibited consistently throughout the show.  Embellished neutrals, rich textures, and just the right amount of ornate touches were head turners.

It girl Serena van der Woodsen of Gossip Girl would have a field day with this collection, it has metallics, sparkling textures, geographically sophisticated designs, and pure magic that radiates from the pieces. It nods to a conservative, high society look, there are plenty of chic coats, gowns, suits, and outerwear that further heightens the elegance of these outfits.

Badgley Mischka crafted a high tone celebrity chic look that could fit an apparent range of professional settings or social events. The modern and classic aspects of each piece combine and flourish so perfectly together to make slightly conservative pieces a thing of the present, something that women could wear and feel fabulous in, while upholding a look that demands respect.

Overall, the metallics, sparkles, and ornate elements add spice to the pieces and perhaps the message here is to confirm that women can have fun with conservative wear. Within the ornateness of the pieces there is simultaneously a respect for the classics.

Whites, blacks neutrals, reds and metallics are heightened by the accessorizations, but make no mistake, they are the foundation perhaps speaking to the stability and consistency that women offer to society.

Badgley Mischka created a line that celebrates feminine, chic boss women, perhaps representing women on a mission and looking glamorous while setting off to conquer the day. There is a serious element to the art, but an added fun twist reminds us not to take life so seriously, a reminder to become lighter in our minds, bodies, and souls as we trek through life.

The metallics, sparkles, jewels, added fabrics, and patterned imagery to the clothes stand out the most as a theme, making it easy to envision royalty wearing a Badgley Mischka creation. Shoulder embellishments may serve as a message for women to stand tall and go confidently.

Are they encouraging women to embrace femininity amongst men? To quit hiding but rather celebrate the flair that women bring to the table?

Golds and reds symbolize power, opulence, and magic. Badgley Mischka exhibited versatility in meaning and function of the garb.

Badgley Mischka could very well be suggesting that we bask in the glitz and glam of womanhood, to have fun with the most proper and serious of times, and to add our sparkle to the world as well as embrace our own inner light.

Okay, so this blog hones in on the royals, but who’s to say that unofficial royals could be included? The Kardashians and Jenners have been said to claim the American royal crown, and they do fashion like no other. Kim, in particular, is representative of the whole family and she is involved in fashion related affairs as well as her husband, Kanye West. Kim wore a piece of history, and she embodies what fashion does for human kind, it brings art and time back to life. Kim wore Lee Alexander McQueen’s notorious “oyster dress” from his spring 2003 collection. She has one of two existing dresses, gifted to her by her husband, and it speaks volumes and nods its head towards the risk in change. It is made on the order of the shape of an oyster’s shell, and is comprised of tulle and silk chiffon in a creamy pearl color. The dress is shredded and strategically ripped at the upper body. It is said to represent the Greek goddess Aphrodite and her appreciation for the sea because of its oyster shape. Kim Kardashian is an avid collector of high fashion pieces, but to delve further into the meaning of why she wore the dress. It is known that the West family has a deep appreciation for fashion, and this could very well be a nod to the greats before her, a sign of respect and recognition for the history of the piece. Or is Kim establishing herself and associating her identity with Aphrodite? Does the story of the beauty of nature resonate with her? Is it just a collector’s piece that she loved the appearance of and nothing more? Did she and her husband purchase the art in pursuit of gesturing respectfully toward major fashion history, or are they serving personal interests here? Personally, I believe it is a combination of both, as unofficial royalty, I’m sure this high society family has an abundant amount of interest in the art that they are surrounded by at every event they attend, but it  doesn’t hurt for them to be the ones in the fashion statements as well. I’m sure by purchasing the pieces of art and living in them, they are standing their ground and making a statement that they themselves are art. The Cinderella princess vibes brought the drama the Oscars red carpet needed, Kim K chose the perfect fit for the night. Vogue said it best, “she’s pulled out classic creations from Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Roberto Cavalli—but her McQueen moment may be her best to date” (Okwado). I’m sure Kim’s ride to and from was more of a royal chariot type instead of a pumpkin, but she made for the perfect red carpet rags-to-riches story.

Come one, come all fashion queen bees and prince charmings. Your Royal Hauteness awaits. From weddings to award shows, beauty could be a royal pain, but the magic is in fashion. Here’s to delving into the business of royal fashion, the personal tastes of royalty, and the confidence they sport in their haute couture. May this journey of royal insights spark an enticement within us, one that brings us back to the Disney princess days. Nothing compares to the graciousness and elegance of royalty, and as life hardens some, fashion serves as a reminder that the days of princesses are still among us today. All we can do is appreciate the sheer genius required to create haute couture fit for royalty, and watch in awe as the regal effortlessly fit into the art. After all, fashion is the art that contains life, and it takes on endless forms. The embodiment of this medium of art can often demand a certain role play, which is beautiful in itself. Fashion has the power to transport, distract, seduce, provoke, and fuel the fire of emotion. People use the judgement free foundation of fashion to showcase their souls, their inner battles, their triumphs, their beliefs, all while doing so under their own rules. Creative minds and brilliant pairings converge through the power of fashion. Some of the most momentous and happiest times of human history are celebrated by fashion and its driving forces. I’ve always been attracted to the behind-the-scenes aspect of the fashion world, it holds the best kept secrets of art, humanity, and life. There is a story to be told behind every piece. A human is behind every embellishment and bead, their purpose is sewn into the fabric. People’s legacies are stitched within the textures and bodies of clothing, the linings act as bookends to a fairytale story that not only lives happily ever after, but lives on forever.
